Attendance Procedures
Safe Arrival Policy: To guarantee the safe arrival of your child at school, we take attendance each morning and afternoon. If for any reason your child will not be in school, or will be late, it is very important that you let us know (905-685-5489). The school answering machine is on at all times, so calls can be made early in the morning and late in the evening. Your help in this matter is greatly appreciated.
Late Arrival: Students who arrive after the bell has rung will find the doors have been locked. Students must then enter through the front door, check in with Mrs. Lutzer (our secretary) at the office, receive a late pass and then go to class.
Access To Students: Unless special custody arrangements have been made, students are released to their parents or legal guardians only. Alexandra Public School should have official court documentation in the student's Ontario Student Record (O.S.R.) file regarding custody. It is the responsibility of the parent's (s) or guardian to report any changes in the court document to the office immediately.

If the parents/guardians wish their child(ren) to go home at either Lunch Times or After School with another adult, school personnel must receive a written note or phone call. The note/call must indicate the name of the adult and relationship to the child(ren) before picking up the child. In some cases Identification will be requested.

Junior / Senior Kindergarten teachers will only release a student to authorized persons. Either a note, discussion in person or a call to the school must be made in order to confirm who the authorized person will be. In some cases Identification will be requested.

It is also important to notify the school in writing or by phone if a parent / guardian is going out of town and a different caregiver will be responsible for the child(ren) for a period of time.

Early Departure: Appointment/early dismissals should be arranged with your child in advance. You should inform the office by phone (905-685-5489) and/or the teacher by writing a note in the child's organizer. When picking up children for these appointments, please come to the office first and Mrs. Lutzer will page your child to come down to meet you at the main office. Parents are asked not to wander the halls.
Pick Up Procedure:
• Please pre-arrange with your child a consistent pick up location (e.g. right side of the doors) where you will meet your child each day.
• If you are picking up early, please meet come to the office first and Mrs. Lutzer will page your child to come down to meet you at the office.
Extended Absence: If your son/daughter has been absent for an extended period of time due to illness, you may request some work to be prepared for your child to complete at home. Please phone the school and speak with Mrs. Lutzer.
Visitors: If visiting or volunteering in the school, you are asked to go to the office first to speak to our secretary, Mrs. Lutzer or our principal, Ms Lockyer, in order to sign in and receive a visitors pass. Staff and students are encouraged to greet visitors without nametags and direct them to the office.
Inclement Weather: Decisions to close schools are communicated through announcements made on the newscasts of our local radio stations by 7:00 a.m.. Listen carefully to the announcements, as some schools may be closed while others may remain open without buses operating. Parents must use their discretion when sending their child to schools which remain open in severe weather conditions. Early dismissal will also be announced on local radio stations. Every effort will be made to insure safety. Please do not call the school as the phones are needed to contact parents. If you have made arrangements through the school office for another parent to pick up your child, that person will be asked to sign off at the homeroom of that student to indicate that the student is dismissed.

Parking Lot:
Our first priority is to keep our students safe; then we concern ourselves with convenience for drivers. We request your compliance with the following:
• The Parking Lot is for staff and student teacher parking only.
• Our buses also require a clear path each day to drop off Special Needs students.
• The Parking Lot is NOT intended for student drop off. Please use Dufferin Street or the back corner on George Street.
DO NOT block the dumpster or leave your car idling in the lot.
